Video Transcript:

Today we’re going to take a look at choosing the correct path and area light for your job. If you look through our website, you’re going to notice a wide array of path lights to choose from. Ones that have angled heads, one that are just straight tops – how do I know which is the right one for my job? Each one has a specific purpose; we’re going to take a look at those differences today and by the time we’re done, you should be fully equipped to choose the right path light for your job. Let’s get started.

I’ve got a small array of lights laid out here and as you navigate through our website, you’re going to notice there’s a pretty broad selection of path lights. The question is which one is best for my application? They’ll all work as path lights – but some will work better in your specific situation than others. For example, if you need something along the driveway, something with more of an angled shroud that’s adjustable might work better for you. Let’s take a look more in-depth at how each one of these fixtures is going to be used and help you choose the right one for your job.

Most people choose path lights purely based on the style and appearance of each. Our universal stem and hat system is by far the most common choice for path and area lighting. They are very durably made and come with five interchangeable top hats for variable light spread and are available in both aged bronze and copper with brass accents. A neat feature of these path lights is that the hats can actually be raised or lowered slightly on the stem to adjust the light output and the intensity of the beam. You can expect about a 12 to 14 foot diameter of light with most of our hats. The exception is our 10 inch wide hat that throws out a whopping 18 foot diameter of light.

The universal stem and top hat system is an excellent choice for illuminating pathways, steps and low plant material in your garden spaces. For less conspicuous light, the Mini hat series has the same features as a full size light with half the size and half the light throw.

Sometimes you need a path light with a little bit more height – that’s why we offer 6 inch, 12 inch and 24 inch extensions that seamlessly add on to your path light to make it taller. By extending the source of the light higher, we increase the diameter and the throw of the light output, which is great for illuminating around plants and steps. A 5-foot tall area light around a patio will cast about a 35-foot diameter of light simply by adding extensions to our regular path lights.

If you need to cast light across a wide surface area such as a driveway, consider a path light with an adjustable head so that you can adjust the angle of the throw of light. If you want to get more light across a driveway, broadcasting light out from the side, one solution for you would be the Innovator path light. The Innovator is a great choice when you need a bright light source with a high degree of beam adjustability. Here’s an example on the edge of a putting green, illuminating the green so it can be used at night. By adjusting the shroud up, we can illuminate plant material along a back fence or wash the face of a very large boulder. We couldn’t do this with a regular path light.

The Traditions path light is also a great choice if you’re looking for an elegant look in your garden. It will also wash across pathways and walkways with ease. With our wide selection of path and area lights, you can be sure to find the right solution to fit all of your specific needs.

That concludes another segment on how to choose a path and area light that is correct for your project. Hopefully now as you navigate our website, you’ll feel a little bit more empowered on how to choose the correct light that is just right for you.
