In this instructional video, learn how to install a VOLT® Brass Bully Beacon MR16 Well Light in a dock. This same method will also work in decking.
In this video, I’ll be showing you how to install the Brass Bully Beacon Well Light for use in a dock. The Beacon is perfect for this application because it can be placed out of the way, on the edges, to cast light across the decking surface. We’re locating this fixture out on the very edge of our dock.
The first thing you want to do is get your hole drilled. We’re using a 4 inch hole saw for this through the center of a deck board. Next you’re going to need a router with 1/2 inch rabbet bit; this is going to make a ledge for our light to sit on. We are actually going to recess this light slightly into the wood – about 5/8 of an inch – so it sits a little bit lower on the dock and gives it a more custom look. I recommend drilling out and routering your step on a single deck board. Crossing over the void between boards could potentially cause damage and result in having to replace decking.
Now I’ll show you why we cut out the step for our light. From the bottom of the molding to the brass top is 5/8 of an inch. By cutting the edge in, we can now set the fixture in place and only the brass top will be visible. With the fixture in place, all that is left is to install the lamp.
Simply unscrew and remove the top from the base. The Brass Bully MR16 series of well lights has an adjustable gimbal that allows you to change the outgoing direction of light. All of the fixtures in in the Brass Bully MR16 series use a standard MR16 halogen or LED lamp. (Note: Integrated LED versions of Brass Bully well lights are now also available.) Also, aim your lamp angled slightly toward the back of the fixture. The light will be reflected off the inside of the dome and will better reduce glare.
Now re-affix the fixture to the base. To create a better water seal, tighten your screws in a crisscrossing manner to more evenly set the rubber gasket. Now finally to affix the base to the dock, use some dabs of silicone placed on the bottom of the screw projections. This is going to hold the fixture firmly in place. If you want to more permanently bond the base to the wood, use an epoxy instead of the silicone.
The Brass Bully Beacon is a versatile light fixture that is equally at home on docks as well as it is in the landscape, illuminating pathways and sidewalks. If you have any questions about the Brass Bully Beacon light or any of our other products, please call our customer care at (813) 978-3700.
