Turtle Safe Landscape Lighting

By some estimates, only 1 in 1,000 sea turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood. Natural selection accounts for most of this, but there’s also a threat that humans are responsible for: artificial lighting. Turtles on a nesting beach usually hatch at night for protection against predators and the sun. Once hatched, the tiny sea turtles find their way to the ocean via reflections of the moon and stars on the water. Unfortunately, artificial lighting from nearshore buildings and streets can cause hatchlings to become disoriented and wander inland - lowering their odds of survival. VOLT® designed and manufactures each of the products in this category with turtle safety in mind, and each is Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved.

What makes a landscape lighting fixture turtle safe?

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has established a certification process for lighting manufacturers who wish to market and sell turtle-safe lighting products:

  • Keep it low: Fixtures must be able to be mounted as low as possible and still be appropriate for the needed purpose
  • Keep it shielded: Fixtures must be able to shield the bulb, lamp or glowing lens from the beach, wildlife corridor or protected natural area when mounted properly
  • Keep it long: Fixtures must accept and use long wavelength (560nm or longer) bulbs
